It was a dark and stormy night.
This is usually how most scaring and haunting stories begin. So I will do the same. Believe me, I never thought that I myself, who loves ghost stories more than anything else, would be narrating a piece of my "experiences". So, here goes...
It was a dark and stormy night. It was Monsoon and the beginning of August. The year, I think, was 2007. I live in Pakistan and at that time it was the start of electricity load shedding and it was going on, on hourly basis. The light went bust at 8:00 pm sharp. We all were having dinner and my two little sisters, Hiba and Huda, who were 2 and about 6 months old, were sleeping upstairs. We hadn't installed UPS or Generator so it was dark all over the house and outside. Not a speck of light escaped the heavy blanket of darkness spread on the whole city that night. It wasn't a surprise, as in Monsoon, the dense clouds cover the entire sky. Even in day, the atmosphere was hot but shady.
I am a fast eater and that day we had rice and curry so I finished up in about 3 minutes or so. My Mom suddenly said, "Oh My Allah! Hiba and Huda are sleeping alone upstairs! And in this total darkness too! If they wake up, they would get scared. Zainab, can you please go upstairs and stay with them for," she checked the clock, "40 minutes?" What could I say? So I quietly picked up a torch and went upstairs.
Oh Allah! The place looked so scary in the dark by itself, let alone my imagination set to work. It seemed a nightmare. But I couldn't stop. If I did, my dorky brother would never let me forget that I was scared of what...DARK? HAHAHAHA!!!! And I would have to let it go by saying  "Very funny, dork!" It wouldn't be much fun, I can tell you.
Anyway, Taking small steps, I reached the bedroom where my two sisters were sleeping soundly. One was snoring with a mouth open, actually. Normally I would have laughed and stuffed pencil shavings in her open cavity of a mouth but not then. It was creepy.
I sat by them, on the bed, making shadow shapes with my hands with the help of torch. Suddenly, I heard a loud clanging and banging from the kitchen. I stiffened. Oh shit. This is so not happening! The ghost of my dreams had arrived!
Or not. Maybe it was just a strong current of wind. Maybe there is a mouse in our kitchen. Maybe the kitchen utensils were placed unbalanced. So many Maybes!!!
I started crying. Crying, can you believe it?! I started crying and then laid down on my bed. I stopped crying and soon after when I was drifting off to sleep, I felt as if someone was watching me. Like there was another entity in the room. Quick as lightening, I turned and... saw a shadow! A perfect shadow of a man running away as I turned. I was so scared! Immediately after I fell asleep. The shadow kept haunting me throughout my dream and then finally, when it was about to choke me (in my dream), I woke up, drenched in sweat. I discovered my throat was dry. I crawled out of my bed. It was 3 in the morning. Again, I saw the shadow creeping through the main door. I was terrified out of my wits. But still, I got a glass full of water, drank it and went back to sleep.
This event doesn't seem that scaring when you read it but you would have felt it truly, had you been in my shoes  at that time!
